Looking for Restaurants in Hampstead? Try West Hampstead’s Hidden Gems

If you're on the hunt for great restaurants in Hampstead, don’t overlook its charming neighbour, West Hampstead. Just a scenic 15-minute walk down the hill from Hampstead Village, West Hampstead boasts a relaxed, independent dining scene that’s often overlooked. But locals know—it’s a hidden gem!

Yes, Hampstead Village has its undeniable charm, but West Hampstead offers a unique, laid-back vibe and is incredibly easy to reach from anywhere in London.

The heart of West Hampstead, especially along West End Lane towards West End Green, exudes authentic neighbourhood charm. Fun fact:  in 1875, locals dramatically rescued our beloved West End Green from a property developer—check out the short story on our history page here.

West Hampstead vs Hampstead restaurants

While upmarket Hampstead is known for its leafy streets and rich history, its dining scene has always been less exciting than one might expect. Sure, there are a few gems like Jin Kichi for sushi, and my new favourite, 28 Church Row (how did they get the ghost out of Le Cellier du Midi?), now offering delicious tapas in a cosy setting. Don’t forget the iconic Spaniards Inn, a historic pub with stunning surroundings. And I can’t help but get nostalgic about The House on Rosslyn Hill—remember it from the '90s? Such a vibe!

But have you ever wondered why Hampstead lacks more standout dining options? A Spectator review even suggested, "Great restaurants can’t thrive in Hampstead".  It’s curious how Hampstead restaurants don’t always live up to the area’s prestige.

On the flip side, humble West Hampstead boasts several great, authentic dining options! Fun fact: the popular Creperie de Hampstead—a long-time staple of Hampstead Village—has now found the perfect outpost on the bridge right here in West Hampstead, yet another reason to head this way instead.

Now, here are three great reasons to visit West Hampstead:

1. The beer garden at The Black Lion is unbeatable in the summer.

2. Tannin & Oak, a fantastic independent wine shop and bar, is perfect for a glass of wine or two.

3. And following that, of course, dinner at The Wet Fish Café, where you’ll enjoy quality, fresh food in the relaxed, unique atmosphere of a converted fishmonger. Don’t miss our monthly live music dinners—still West Hampstead’s best-kept secret!

And here are two bonus reasons: Takagiya on Fortune Green Rd, a true hidden gem offering traditional Japanese dining with dishes served straight from the pan, and Colaba, just opposite the Wet Fish, serving authentic Indian cuisine from Mumbai. Bon appétit!
